How to audit a page
- Pick a mode: analyze by URL or paste the page's HTML (Ctrl+U → copy everything).
- Click Analyze: the page is read and the key meta tags are extracted on the spot.
- Check the preview of how the result looks on Google, on desktop and mobile, with character counters.
- Go through the checklist, fix the failures and warnings on your site and run the audit again.
Meta tags win the click before the visit
Title and description are your free ad on the results page: they're what users compare against competitors before deciding where to click. A well-ranked page with a truncated title or a generic description loses clicks every day, and a lower CTR tends to drag the position down over time.
Open Graph tags play the same role outside Google: they define the image, title and text when your link circulates on WhatsApp, LinkedIn or Instagram. The checker's preview shows your result the way Google renders it, with character counters, so you can fix the copy before it gets truncated.
The tags that matter most
If you have to prioritize, start with these:
- <title>
<title>Page title</title>
The blue text of the result. Up to ~65 characters, with the main term first and the brand at the end. - Meta description
<meta name="description" content="…">
The gray paragraph under the title. 70 to 158 characters that explain the page and invite the click. - Canonical
<link rel="canonical" href="https://…">
Points to the official version of the URL so parameters and duplicates don't split ranking signals. - og:image
<meta property="og:image" content="https://…">
The image of the shared link. Use an absolute URL and a 1200×630 px image so it renders well everywhere. - Meta robots
<meta name="robots" content="noindex">
Controls indexing. A forgotten noindex removes the whole page from Google, so it's worth checking on every release.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some URLs fail to load?
For security, browsers block reads of pages on other domains that don't authorize the access (the CORS policy), and the analysis runs locally. In those cases, use Paste HTML mode: open the page, press Ctrl+U, copy the source code and paste it here. Pages hosted on this same domain always load.
Is the pasted HTML sent to a server?
No. The code is analyzed locally and discarded when you leave the page.
Can I audit several URLs at once?
Not in this version; the tool analyzes one page at a time. To audit a whole site, repeat the process on the most important pages: the home page, category pages and the pages that get the most traffic.
Are the character limits official?
No. Google doesn't publish limits and, in practice, truncates by pixel width, not by character count. The numbers in this tool (65 for the title, 158 for the description) are the market reference that avoids truncation in most cases.
